[Event] Ch'en Ching-k'ai's Civil Retrial Hearing: Call for Court Observation Volunteers!

Former national handball player Ch'en Ching-k'ai once had a bright future ahead of him. While studying at National Changhua University of Education, he was involved in a severe traffic accident. Three days after the crash, he found that he could no longer see; his world became a blur, and his promising athletic career was forced to a halt...

Later, Ch'en gradually accepted his blindness and worked hard to rebuild his life. However, judges concluded that because he could still catch a frisbee, play ball, and write, he was not actually blind and had faked blindness to defraud insurance payouts ("malingering"). Despite strong and compelling evidence provided by evaluation reports from National Taiwan University and multiple hospitals, as well as testimony from an orientation and mobility instructor who helped him adapt to blindness confirming that he did not commit fraud, the judges still sentenced him to one year and two months in prison.

After the Judicial Reform Foundation took up his case for rescue, the defense team filed for retrials in both criminal and civil proceedings, but the criminal retrial was dismissed. However, there is still good news amidst the despair: the civil lawsuits filed against Ch'en by Mingtai Insurance and Cathay Life Insurance seeking the "return of insurance payouts" have both been granted "retrials"! On October 23, 2019, the retrial proceedings between Ch'en Ching-k'ai and Cathay Life Insurance will hold an oral argument hearing.
