Join Us in Sowing the Seeds of Critical Thinking and Rooting the Rule of Law
▌Before waiting for a better society, what more can we do?
Faced with all kinds of social issues, we have all felt stirred and perplexed, and have strived to make our voices heard. Sometimes, however, we wonder: are we actually having a dialogue, or are we just arguing? Are we truly on the path to change?
In addition to promoting institutional reform, the Judicial Reform Foundation (JRF) has chosen to concurrently tackle education from the ground up, accompanying the younger generation in building the concept of the rule of law and fostering independent thinking. This empowers them not merely to react emotionally when facing public issues, but equips them with the ability to listen, understand, and express themselves—making fairness and respect an attitude for daily living.
▌Is there a class that can help students understand how to protect themselves, respect others, and participate in society?
Students today not only face the pressure of advancing to higher education, but when stepping into the digital world, they may also encounter verbal attacks, social prejudice, and even legal risks.
We hope to provide students with a different kind of legal education class—one not prepared for exams, but prepared for life. Through hands-on practice, experiential learning, and dialogue, we assist students in internalizing abstruse legal knowledge into actionable concepts.
Since 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟕, we have collaborated with campuses and community universities to hold nearly 𝟑𝟓𝟎 legal lectures and over 𝟓𝟎𝟎 mock trials, bringing the law out of high walls and into the classroom:
📍 In mock trials, students personally play the roles of judges, prosecutors, defense counsel, and defendants, understanding fairness and procedure through their roles.
📍 Through the lived experiences of victims of wrongful convictions, students grasp the importance of the "presumption of innocence" and learn to view every possibility rationally.
📍 We design lectures on risk issues so that students can recognize social risks such as dummy account fraud and drug use at an early stage, learning to protect themselves amid temptations.
We hope that through cooperation with teachers, we can provide students with more diverse and practical legal education courses. Furthermore, we hope that through such learning, we can cultivate the next generation's capacity for critical thinking, dialogue, and participation in public affairs.
▌From Traditional Criminal Cases to Child and Youth Sexual Exploitation: Brand-New Mock Trial Script Officially Released
In the past, JRF’s mock trials featured criminal cases such as drug-induced death and brawls. Coinciding with the expansion of the Citizen Judges Act scope in 2026 to include offenses carrying a minimum sentence of ten years or more, practical case types will become more diverse. Responding to feedback from school campuses, we are officially launching a brand-new script: The Suspicious Case of Child and Youth Sexual Exploitation. Using cases close to students' lives, this script guides them to reflect on the complex relationships among gender, power, and judicial judgment, while practicing rational dialogue on controversial public issues.
To bring this new teaching material into schools, we partnered with bar associations in central and southern Taiwan this October and December to hold seed instructor training sessions in Taichung and Tainan, drawing enthusiastic participation from nearly 40 teachers and lawyers. Moving forward, this new script will be fully made available for teachers to apply for use, ensuring that the spirit of the rule of law is no longer just text in textbooks, but becomes a public value that can be discussed and understood in daily life.
▌We Invite You to Become a Fellow Traveler in Legal Education
Thirty years ago, judicial reform was a movement; thirty years later, legal education should be our daily routine.
We invite you to make a donation to support us and help bring a different kind of legal education course into schools.
Allowing the seeds of critical thinking to sprout from the classroom is also the most crucial investment in our future society.
