The road of judicial reform is long — thankfully, we don't walk it alone. The ever-changing A-Fa and five pals with very different personalities represent every one of us who cares about fairness and justice ➡︎➡︎➡︎ Come meet them!
The Judicial Reform Foundation has long promoted judicial reform, rescued the wrongfully convicted, accompanied parties through judicial proceedings, and devoted itself to legal education. The personalities of these pals mirror the different facets of the JRF's work: one shape-shifts to fill every gap, one charges to the front line, one quietly stays by your side, one takes part from behind a keyboard, and one is learning to tell true from false.
Shape-Shifting Captain
A-Fa
"Who shall I become today?"
The first member of the family, and the best at "transforming." A-Fa believes judicial reform hides in every kind of daily life — so entering a school he becomes a teacher, entering a courtroom he becomes a lawyer, picking up a pen he becomes an advocate. Every identity is his way of bringing fairness and justice into everyday life. When not transforming, he loves taking walks and drinking bubble tea.
In charge ofPublic communication; connecting every member of the family
LikesBubble tea, making new friends
Can't standHearing "the courts have nothing to do with me"
Where to find himWherever he's needed
Wrongful Conviction Rescue Team
Willy
"Trouble? Willy's got your back!"
Forthright and the loudest of the bunch, a doer through and through. The spines on his back are especially sensitive to "cases that don't feel right" — every time he spots a doubtful piece of evidence, another spine stands up. Willy believes that as long as someone is willing to take another look and ask one more question, overlooked truths have a chance of being recovered.
In charge ofWrongful conviction rescue, forensic science
LikesFlagging doubtful points one by one, cheering everyone on
Can't standThe phrase "the case is already decided — let it go"
Where to find himPress conferences, buried in case files
Bill-Tracking Team
Chia-ming
"Quick! Bills wait for no one."
The fastest walker in the family and an efficiency fanatic. The triangle is the most stable shape — just as procedural justice is the most stable foundation of the judiciary. Chia-ming shuttles briskly every day between the Legislative Yuan, the courts, and the office, keeping a close eye on the progress of every judiciary-related bill, terrified of missing a key provision in the blink of an eye.
In charge ofParliamentary oversight; advocacy on bills and institutions
LikesItemized lists, meetings that start on time
Can't standBills shelved indefinitely
Where to find himThe corridors of the Legislative Yuan, the front row of public hearings
Party Accompaniment Team
Li-chu
"I… I'll stay with you."
The shyest of the family — one glance and his face turns even redder (though he was red to begin with). But don't be fooled: when Li-chu blushes, it's usually out of worry for someone else. He doesn't say much, yet he is always the first to sit down beside a party to a case. He knows that people walking into a courthouse often don't need grand principles — they need someone willing to stay.
In charge ofAccompanying parties and their families; courtroom accompaniment
Where to find himCourtroom galleries, meeting rooms
Advocacy Mobilization Team
Shu-fen
"Leave this one to me — petition link generating."
A hardcore homebody whose favorite spot is the living-room sofa. But staying home doesn't mean staying out — Shu-fen is the family's "advocacy action" lead: the JRF's petition and solidarity campaigns, social media posts, and open judicial data are all launched and spread online by him. Watching livestreams, looking up judgments, sharing fact-checks — he does it all. He carries a unicorn swim ring everywhere, because data is an ocean and he's always ready to dive in. (He seems to be related to A-Fa somehow…)
In charge ofAdvocacy actions — launching petitions, solidarity campaigns, promoting open judicial data
LikesDatabases, daytime livestream archives, the moment a petition hits its target
Can't standNot being able to find public data or material for posts
Where to find himThe sofa at home, every major social platform
Legal Education Team
Mei-ling
"Huh? So that's not how it is!"
Self-professed to be the most gullible of the family: sensational headlines get believed first, and slick talk easily leads him astray. But precisely because he gets fooled so often, Mei-ling understands best the importance of "verifying." Unlike Shu-fen, who charges at the advocacy front line, Mei-ling doesn't launch campaigns — he walks into schools and communities, turning every experience of being fooled into teaching material, teaching everyone to think first, check first, and only then tell others. He is the part of each of us that needs to think one step further.
In charge ofEducation outreach — legal education, media literacy training
LikesThe moment of sudden realization
Can't standDisinformation spreading faster than corrections
Where to find himSchool lectures, community courses, mock trials
