Hai-Wang's Daybreak | Taichung Special Exhibition - Chiu Ho-Shun's Forgotten 32 Years: Lecture Series

Judicial Reform Foundation

Chiu Ho-Shun, age 60, was born in Longfeng Village, Zhunan Township, Miaoli County.
In 1988, when he was 28, police and prosecutors accused him of involvement in the Ko Hung Yu-Lan disappearance case and the Lu Cheng case and obtained confessions through torture. The record contains as many as 288 interrogation statements that contradict one another, contain major gaps, and were unlawfully obtained through coercion. Yet the court relied principally on the defendants' confessions and ultimately imposed a death sentence that became final.

Chiu Ho-Shun remains at the Taipei Detention Center, now in the thirty-second year of a wrongful imprisonment that has swallowed more than half his life. The year he was born, Longfeng Harbor in Zhunan had an unusually abundant catch, and "Hai-Wang" became A-Shun's childhood nickname. But the storms of his life-and the currents still running behind detention-center walls-have taken his youth, confined his freedom, and consumed decades of his life.

Support organizations are bringing "Hai-Wang's Daybreak - Chiu Ho-Shun's Forgotten 32 Years" to Taichung. Through art and cultural experiences, we invite visitors to learn A-Shun's story, confront the cruelty of the death penalty and wrongful convictions, and stand with everyone who continues to place themselves between A-Shun and the state's gun-hoping to bring Hai-Wang the clearing skies and daybreak he has waited 32 years to see.

When that day finally comes, we will say to him together: "Hai-Wang, we're just glad you're safe."
